Travel To Lanzarote – The Island of Fire

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

There are some fantastic holiday destinations is Spin. But few of them can match the Canary Island of Lanzarote for dramatic and surreal scenery. As this small island was rocked by massive eruptions during the 1730´s which irrevocably altered its terrain – transforming much of the island’s interior into an eerie lunar-scape.

Lanzarote is one of the seven islands that comprise the Canarian archipelago. A Spanish owned territory that is located off the West coast of Africa. A location that helps to create a fantastic climate all year round and which is often likened to an eternal Spring. With temperatures averaging at around 22 Celsius whatever the time of year.

Package tourism first took off in the Canaries during the 1970´s and Lanzarote now welcomes around 1.5 million visitors every year. The majority of them from the UK, Eire and Germany. With accommodation in Lanzarote concentrated in the three main resorts of Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. Which is where tourists will find the largest selection of villas in Lanzarote.

Along with a wide range of Lanzarote holiday apartments.

But despite its popularity Lanzarote still remains relatively untouched by tourism. Especially in relation to the larger islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. As high rise construction was banned here during the 1970´s, along with advertising hoardings. Whilst tourism is well contained. Leaving Lanzarote much as nature intended.

Which is just as well – as the island has been blessed with an abundance of natural, if slightly unconventional, beauty spots. The most famous of which is the Timanfaya National Park – home to hundreds of square kilometres of twisted lava fields and spent volcanic peaks. Which were created by a six year eruption during the 1730´s.

At the time these events obviously caused a great deal of devastation and hardship. With many Lanzaroteños forced to flee and start new lives abroad. Today however the surreal scenery of the Montañas del Fuego – or Fire Mountains as they are called locally – is the number one tourist attraction. Welcoming close to one million visitors a year.

Elsewhere on the island a local artist called César Manrique succesfully fused this twisted terrain with his own creativity to develop a series of unique attractions. Such as the Jameos del Agua – a collapsed lava tube which Manrique converted into a massive underground auditorium and concert venue during the late 1960´s.

This project was hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” by the visiting Hollywood legend Rita Heyworth and really helped to put Lanzarote on the map for the first time, winning plaudits and acclaim worldwide.

Before his untimely death in 1992 Manrique created a further six similar attractions around the island. Helping to secure UNESCO protected biosphere status for Lanzarote in the process.

Friday, December 25th, 2009

With the hundreds and thousands of people that go backpacking on a yearly basis, India has established itself as a firm favorite, and that is no mean feat when you consider the range of locations that backpackers can choose from. So, what is it that makes India such a popular backpacking destination?

Traveling in India is never boring and there is always something to write home about, especially if you venture away from the backpacker hotspots and are determined to discover India outside of the most popular destinations. Then you will feel more like a traveler and less like a tourist.

In the half a year that the majority of tourist visas permit, you can backpack extensively, and still feel as though you only took in a tiny part of what is there. In fact, India is big enough that you could spend a number of years there without seeing all of its charms. You will find beautiful Himalayan valleys, breathtaking mountain views, tropical beaches and holy cities.

Friday, December 25th, 2009

When you hear the name of Finland, you may consider the word as fun-land via the pronunciation. But if you have chance to travel in Finland, you must admit that how fun here is! Finland is called the hometown of Santa Claus and there are many lakes in the country. Additionally, the forest cover rate in Finland is reach up to 97%.

Because of high forest cover rate, the first impression given by Finland is that is a world of green. Lakes are surrounded by green and so do the houses and highways. In my opinion, camping at here is so fantastic that you can have a drink, have sunshine and above all have a comfortable rest. Because of the beautiful and comfortable environment, your heart will be cleaned up and become calm. In summer, whether near the sea or lake, there is abundant sunshine and people from all over the world come here to enjoy the sunbathing.

Sauna is a feature of Finland and there is a sauna contest every year. Sauna lovers from different countries would join the crazy contest to feel the heat 110 °C and challenge the limits of their own. For audiences, they are not free. They usually bring their self-made instruments, knock and shout crazy before the game. The most popular rock songs are broadcasting, children are dancing with the songs and people, whether contesters or spectators, are talking with each other joyfully. After the match start, the atmosphere at here began to become more and more warmer. No matter how long you insisted, the warm applauses will for you. Besides the sauna contest, there are large sauna rooms in every hotel. Many people also have their own sauna room at home. In a word, sauna has been fully integrated into the Finnish life.

Choosing between Cunard, Ocean village and P&O Cruises

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Cumbria Cruises has been privileged to work with some of the most unique cruise providers, among them – Ocean Village, P&O Cruises, and Cunard. For those of you who are planning to go on a cruise this year, we have compared the premier cruise offers from the above companies.

Cunard, established by Sir Samuel Cunard, is dedicated to maintaining the majestic opulence of the first transatlantic liners. History meets modernity here, as you go on a cruise with the company that has been in operation for over 150 years. If you are aboard of Queen Elizabeth, choose between an afternoon white-glove tea service and ballroom dancing at the Queen’s Room, or entertain yourself to the Caribbean beats and hip tunes at the Yacht Club – both are state-of-the-art experiences. Those who are fascinated by the Titanic story and movie will surely enjoy travelling on Queen Elizabeth the Second for just the right reason, although with much more security. Many a famous face has stepped on board of the ship, including Her Majesty and the Emperor of Japan, David Bowie and Dame Vera Lynn, only to enjoy her effortless luxury, soft glow, and impeccable yet unobtrusive service. The restaurant menus boast mouth-watering dishes, and you are surely to be amazed at the exquisite wine list.

The story of relaxed, elegant sophistication of Cunard liners continues aboard of Queen Victoria and Queen Mary, with mahogany decor, silver service, diffused lighting, and carefree atmosphere. On all ships you are treated to live performances, exquisite healthcare packages, Internet facilities, and well-stocked libraries. Depending on your accommodation, you receive a daily newspaper, daily basket of fresh fruit, a carefully attended bar room service, with an attentive butler at hand at all times. Queen Victoria is children-friendly, with play areas for kids staying open until midnight.

Cunard liners criss-cross the seas and oceans, and you can well relive the awe of the 19th c. travellers if you do a world tour with Cunard. Upon leaving Southampton, the ships go in all directions, particularly to the popular Caribbean, Mediterranean, and European destinations. The newest addition to the Cunard fleet is Queen Elizabeth. The ship is to go into operation in October 2010, and the bookings for her Maiden Season have recently started.

Cheap Flight Tickets – The How To!

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

If you are planning a trip that is going to involve flying somewhere I think you are wondering how much the flight ticket will cost. Most of the big travel companies would not want you to know this, but the truth is that you can get super cheap plane tickets. The key is just knowing how to do it, and here I am going to share with you the tips on how you can do that.

1. The first thing to do, is to watch the flight times, when they’re going to your destination. Very often flights will leave at weird times, in this case I am very happy. The reason I get excited is because I know I will be able to negotiate with the airlines to get the best deals, because the demand for those flights are very low.

2. Secondly that you can use in order to get cheap flight deals, would be to contact the airlines via hotline around midnight. The reason that you want to do it at this hour is because this is when the systems automatically update, so you can be one of the first ones, on the line.

Nightlife, Sports, Cruises and More Available in Florida’s Tampa Bay Region

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Beautiful Tampa and Tampa Bay are located on the west coast of Florida and about an hour and a half from Orlando. Every time we go over there I discover something new and different, this time it was Channelside and the Port of Tampa. Of course the Tampa Port Authority is there and cruise or cargo ships can be seen coming and going at various times. There is a really great aquarium with several exhibits showing the different kinds of Florida water ways and what lives in them. They have a great little ‘water park’ area for the kids that has giant moray eels for kids to battle with water guns and a pirate ship they can explore. Channelside itself is an entertainment complex that has great nightlife, shopping, dinning and a movie theater. The Towers of Channelside are brand new, just completed in 2007, they are twin 30 story upscale condos, not a bad place to live if you like a lot of action.

Ybor City is also a place I’ve always wanted to go and got the chance to visit this time. It’s a great little section of the city that steeped in tradition of old world Europe. Ybor City was founded in the 1880’s by Vicente Martinez. Here you’ll find spectacular buildings, quaint shops, fabulous food, delicious coffee and hand rolled cigars and the nightlife? Don’t get me started. There are clubs every few feet, along with several entertainment venues, it’s a great place to spend a day walking around and a night dancing and parting with friends. There is a place for everyone to party no matter what you’re into. Coyote Ugly is a place where you can dance on the bar and chat up the lady bar keeps, they always have something to say. Club Prana has five different levels with different dance club styles on each for maximum nighttime enjoyment.

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

There is no doubt that there are lots of people who are spending thousands of dollars on their one week getaway. But this shouldn’t’ always need to be the case as there are lots of budget travel options that can let anyone save a few bucks when traveling. Anyone can stay on their budgets and still experience a remarkable and fun-filled trip with their families or kids if they only know how to use their creativity and knowledge.

Traveling by plane can be quite expensive but many still opt to travel by air over land because they want to save time and gasoline cost. To lessen your airfare, it is wise to check the Internet for some great discounted online fares or last minute flight fares. To save some bucks even more, it would be good if you can have flexible travel dates. Oftentimes, the days that have higher rates are Monday, Sunday and Friday. So it would be best if you schedule your trip on Saturday, Thursday, Wednesday or Tuesday in order to obtain better rates.

There are lots of online booking websites that allow travelers to check which day has a lower rate and find out what options could be best for you. Getting your ticket earlier or later can help you save some money on the price of your ticket. You may also check the airports that surround both the arrival and the departure city. In most cases, an hour drive or two may be needed to reach the arrival or departure airport but if it can help save you a few bucks on each of your ticket, then it will be worth the drive.
