Ski Vacations with Ski Clubs

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

There are many different types of clubs throughout the world. In fact, there is a club or organization for just about everything that you can imagine! Skiing is no exception. Ski clubs are a great way to learn new things, and to go on ski vacations with other members. In fact, ski club members often get discounted rates on ski vacation packages.

No matter where you live, there is a ski club near you. This is true even if you live in a place that does not ever get snowfall! These clubs regularly get together for trips to various mountains, ski areas, and ski resorts. Some are local clubs, meaning that the slopes that they ski on are within driving distance, while others are more national or global, which means that they not only ski locally, if possible, but they also plan ski trips.

Again, members of ski clubs often receive deep discounts on ski vacation packages. Arrangements are usually made through the club, so that everyone is eligible for the discounts. The money that is required from each member for the trip is usually paid to the club, and the club passes the funds on to pay for lodging, airfare, meals, lift tickets, and other perks that are included in the trip. Because arrangements are being made for a group of people– which is usually fairly large – discounts are given. This benefits all members of the club.

Tips on Planning a Caribbean Vacation during Hurricane Season

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

When one dreams of a Caribbean vacation, sunbathing, water sports, and spending lazy afternoons on a hammock under the trees is what springs to mind. But a hurricane can down the shutters even on those simple pleasures, let alone popular activities like snorkeling and SCUBA diving.

So what is the strategy to plan a vacation in the Caribbean during hurricane season?

• Hurricanes in the Caribbean are more common in the months of August, September and October, though the official season is from June to November. Scheduling a holiday early in the season (June or July) or at the end of the season in November considerably reduces the risk of running into a hurricane while you are there.
• Choosing a Caribbean destination like Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Trinidad, Tobago or Barbados is wiser, since these islands are rarely hit by hurricanes.
• Check for information on the start of the rainy season in your destination choice – Curacao’s rainy season starts in October, whereas Aruba and Turks and Caicos islands get very little rainfall while in St. Lucia, the rainy season coincides with the hurricane season. (more…)

Discover Rural Thailand By Trekking Around Chiang Mai

Friday, November 20th, 2009

The northern Thailand city of Chiang Mai, known as “The Rose of the North” by locals due to its beauty and friendly people, is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. This bustling place is an important historical city and full of traditional and modern Thai culture. It is also the base for many tours and treks to the hills and mountains of northern Thailand.

Getting to Chiang Mai is fairly straightforward; the real travelling comes when you are on your tour. International flights to Thailand usually drop you off at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport so you may choose to spend some time soaking up the sites of this famous city and then moving on to Chiang Mai Province. From Bangkok there are plenty of ways to reach Chiang Mai, with regular flights, buses and trains to the city. Travel time by plane is just over an hour, train is between 11 and 15 hours (first class sleepers are fairly cheap though, but popular so book ahead) and the bus is around 10 hours.

After you have spent a few nights in your hotel room in Chiang Mai, maybe visited one of the city’s famous markets or temples and enjoyed some traditional Pad Thai, you can embark on your adventure. There are many different ways of touring the north. Some choose to go as part of a group, or hire a guide. You can also choose to drive yourself. This may seem like a scary prospect, but the rentals are very reliable and the roads are pretty well maintained.

    A Pocketful of Miracles

    Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Sometimes, when the weather is particularly unpleasant, or I’m sitting in the office wishing I were sailing, I reach into my pocket and pull out my Patuxent River. Look, here it is, let me show you. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Yes, yes, I know, you can’t actually see it. It’s my metaphorical Patuxent River, assembled one experience and one memory at a time this May during a cruise down the Bay from Annapolis. It took me nearly a week to put together all the pieces, but now I can pull it out anytime I want to and admire its lush green shoreline and revisit its amiable creeks and anchorages and just remember . . . See, there’s dirt on that part. (C’mon, just play along; pretend you see it too.) That’s where I joined a group of enthusiasts at Jefferson Patterson State Park for a public dig at the site of an old plantation. And see, over here, a few crumbs left over from a jumbo Stoney’s crabcake sandwich on Broomes Island. Oops, there’s an empty Sam Adams bottle tucked in behind Vera’s that somebody missed. Oh well, it’s a fine looking river anyway, though I can’t seem to get that coffee stain out of St. Leonard Creek, no matter how hard I try. Wait, I’ll tell you about that in a minute. First, I want to show you my favorite place on the river. Let me hold it up so you can see where it is. Okay, now we’re looking at the mouth of the river, as if we were out in the Bay looking in. Straight ahead there is Solomons Island. See it? Now forget Solomons, because we’re not going there. I’ve been there; you’ve been there. So, no, we’re not going there. Instead, look across the river to the left, just where the Route 4 (Governor Thomas Johnson) bridge comes back down to earth in St. Mary’s County. (more…)

Dublin is a destination that is full of character; from the elegant Georgian quarter to the eclectic neighbourhoods just a mile or two away, the divisions in the city are typical of Irish history and a lot can be learnt from a trip to Ireland’s capital.

Getting to Ireland’s capital and largest city should be straightforward as air, rail and road links from Europe and further afield serve the city centre well. Dublin is in fact the most important point of entry and departure for the country with an overwhelming number of airlines arriving in, and departing from, Dublin Airport.

Dublin is the nation’s primary rail hub so there are several train stations, as well as bus depots. The city also has two ports that serve as the main points of sea transport with Britain so whatever mode of transport you choose your journey into the city centre should be quick and easy.

An utterly charismatic capital, Dublin has seen steady economic growth over the last decade or so and this has led to an influx of people from around the world choosing to settle in the city. The diverse and multicultural population creates a cosmopolitan feel and there is a little bit of everything to indulge yourself in during your stay.

Dublin has been a vibrant melting pot for several different cultures for many years. A stroll down Grafton Street or the Temple Bar area makes it clear to see that Dublin is a multi-cultured city that hosts an exotic selection of music, dance, cuisine and fashion.
